Understanding The Basics Of ROHS Compliance Testing

RoHS Testing

The Restriction Of Hazardous Substances Directive (ROHS) can be defined as a directive or regulation passed by the European Union pertaining to the use of some specific hazardous substances in various electronic articles and equipment. ROHS compliance testing, with the help of ROHS testing equipment is performed to keep a check on the use of such equipment in the electronics industry.

There are certain substances that are considered perilous and are not environment friendly. These substances are not used extensively in the electronic equipment manufacture industry due their hazardous nature. These can be very dangerous on getting exposed while carrying forward the recycling and manufacture of any electronic equipment.

The directive was launched on July, 1, 2016 which stated the restricted usage of the below mentioned substances:
  • Hexavalent chromium
  • Lead
  • Camium
  • Mercury
  • Polybrominated diphenyl ether
  • Polybrominated biphenyls
A lot of equipment were built using one of these elements, which has been restricted for use in the present scenario. The ROHS testing is important as it tests the presence of the above mentioned substances in electronic equipment and devices. These substances are hazardous to the environment, thus, have been restricted for use. The ROHS procedure is regarded as one of the most important standards for developing any electronic equipment. The ROHS is applicable on big electronics manufacturing units, sellers, component distributors, and recyclers.

Who performs compliance testing?
There are many different aspects associated with the manufacturing and development of electronic components. The process starts from the collection of raw materials and appointment of suppliers for the same. Parts manufacturers also need to be appointed to carry forward the process. Since there are so many steps involved, uit is essential to determine a compliance testing authority.
Mainly, the responsibility of ROHS compliance testing lies with the producer of the electronic equipment. The producer can be referred to as the following:
  • A person who is responsible for manufacturing and distributing electronics under personal brand name.
  • A person who deals in resale of components produced under the brand names of others, giving it his/her own brand name.
  •  Deals in the export and import of electronic goods across a nation that follows the ROHS directives.
How to look for a compliant materials provider?
In order to function in accordance with the ROHS directive, the manufacturers of the electronic equipments have to make sure that the materials procured are according the ROHS norms. The supplier should have knowledge about which equipment are covered under the ROHS directives. All material should be ROHS compliant and the supplier must be well aware of this. Whenever a manufacturer of electronic equipment asks the supplier for such materials, he/she should be able to impart proper guidance on substances governed under the ROHS directive.

RoHS Testing

To have a healthy lifestyle it is important to use products which contain less or no hazardous substances. Governments have issued a lot of regulations and directions to reduce the toxic materials and metals. RoHS testing is one of the testings used to check the percentage of the hazardous substances. RoHS (Restriction on Hazardous Substances)  was first applied in the European Union. The United States of America restricts the use of specific hazardous materials found in electrical and electronic products.

In the RoHS testing, tests are generally done to notice the level of the Cadmium, Lead, Mercury, and hexavalent chromium. It is also used to find if total bromine is less than the prescribed limit for the most bromine-rich compound.

What are the main restricted substances?
RoHS is usually referred to as the lead-free regulations, but importantly, following are some of the substances that are restricted under this.
  • Hexavalent chromium (Cr6+)
  • Dibutyl phthalate (DBP)
  • Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB)
  • Mercury (Hg)Butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP)
  • Cadmium (Cd)
  • Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP)
  • Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE)
  • Lead (Pb)
  • Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP)
What are the product components that contain restricted substances?
There is a huge variety of components that customer uses in their daily life. Electronic and electrical products are one of them. Below are some of the examples of the components that include a Lead element in excess.
  • The printed circuit board (PCB), leads, internal and external interconnects
  • Lamps and bulbs
  • Batteries
  • Photographic products, for example- CRT television screens and camera lenses.
  • Paints and pigments
  • Soldering equipment
  • Metal parts
  • Integrated circuits (ICs) or microchips
  • PVC (vinyl) cables as a stabilizer (e.g., power cords, USB cables)
What is the need for RoHS testing?
Many a times it is seen that the components have more or irregular composition which is not safe for health and also shows its effects on the environment adversely. To check the accuracy regarding the composition of the different things in a specific material, this testing is used. In some reputed places, it is important to identify and marked as RoHS certified to ensure the quality of the product. To know more, contact- Resion.
